The Queen of Versailles

This movie chronicles the turbulent times experienced by Jackie and David Siegel during the housing crisis of 2008.  The couple was in the midst of building the largest and most expensive single family home in the U.S.A  when BAM, the housing ballon burst.  David Siegel owned the largest privately owned time share company in the world.  He is shown to be a well connected player in business and political circles.  In fact, he brags on camera how his possibly illegal activities got George W. Bush elected.

The crown jewel of Siegel’s empire is the Westgate Resort located in Las Vegas.  Siegel refuses to release it to his creditors despite the financial relief it would provide.  Jackie meanwhile tries to maintain a sense of normalcy despite the financial chaos.  Jackie surprised me.  I thought she could be dismissed as a trophy wife, however this was not the case.  I was shocked to learn of her acquiring a computer engineering degreee and her stint at IBM.  Nevertheless, she is a model/beauty queen by the time she meets and David.  Sometimes he seems dismissive of her presence.

The oldest daughter is refreshing.  One of my favorite scenes involves her confronting her father and telling him to check his bad attitude.

The bad times experienced by this couple would not be considered terrible relative to what other people without their resources and connections experience.  Nevertheless, the film is worth a look.

Haywire

I love Gina Carano.  In a film filled with a constellation of stars, she shined the brightest.  When this movie was being promoted, I dismissed it as another low budget time waster.  Wow, was I wrong.  Thanks to the wonders of Netscape, I have seen Haywire six times.  Directed by Steven Soderbergh, Haywire is a pure cinematic feast.  Great soundtrack, check. Cool fight scenes, check.  Engaging plot, check.  Nice, chatting dialogues, check.  Check out this list of actors: Michael Douglas, Anotonio Banderas, Michael Fassbender, Bill Paxton, Ewan McGregor, and Channing Tatum.

Gina Carano has been spotted with Henry Cavill who plays Superman in the 2013 installment of the Superman series.  They are supposedly dating.  Regardless, this has sparked rumors that Gina will play Wonder Woman.  Ironically, there is a line in Haywire when the cops refer to her as Wonder Woman.  If she eventually plays the beloved heroine, I will just sit back and smile.

Gina Carano is the most famous and successful female MMA fighter.  I hope that she continues to find success both in the ring and on the screen.  She is a rising star.
